Matagorda Bay Redfish & Trout Action with Captain Chad's Crew

Speckled Trout Action Heats Up Across the Bay

Fishing in Matagorda Bay has been excellent this week, with consistent action across the flats and channels. Redfish have been the stars of the show, schooling along shallow shorelines and responding well to both live shrimp and soft plastics. Many anglers are landing solid slot reds, and we’ve even seen a few oversized bulls putting up exciting fights. Speckled trout are also biting early in the mornings, especially around shell reefs where the bait has been stacked up. Drifting live shrimp under popping corks has been the most reliable setup for steady trout action.

Flounder are starting to pick up along drop-offs and muddy bottoms, with several nice keepers coming aboard in recent trips. The fall migration is just around the corner, which means now is a great time to plan for targeting flatfish in the coming weeks. Weather conditions have been favorable, with light winds making for smooth runs across the bay. Overall, anglers booking with Shallowrun Guide Service can expect productive days on the water, with plenty of opportunities to reel in a mixed bag of Texas saltwater favorites.

One for the books today! Summer fishing in Matagorda, TX brought us some fantastic action on the water. I had the pleasure of taking Richard out for a 5-hour inshore trip with Shallowrun Guide Service. We kicked off early, launching from Matagorda Harbor as the sun was just starting to peek over the horizon. The weather was a bit touch-and-go at first, but it cleared up nicely in the afternoon, though we kept an eye out for possible storms. Water conditions in Matagorda were prime for what we had planned.

Once the stage was set, we got down to business with some serious inshore fishing. We mixed it up between live bait fishing, wade fishing, and drift fishing to cover all our bases. The redfish were biting, and Richard managed to land a nice 23-incher. That's a solid catch that put up a good fight! We worked the area thoroughly, using our local knowledge to hit the best spots. As the day progressed, the clearing skies seemed to energize the fish, and we found ourselves with plenty of action to keep us busy.

We wrapped up our 5-hour adventure with smiles all around. While we didn't break any records, that 23-inch redfish was definitely the highlight of our trip. It's days like this that remind me why Matagorda is such a great spot for inshore fishing. The mix of techniques we used really showcased what this area has to offer, from the shallow flats perfect for wade fishing to the deeper channels where drift fishing can be so productive.
